In an exclusive interview with Elite Daily, Saweetie spoke about biracial identity, love, and college girls’ misconception.

On Wednesday, October 28, Saweetie, an American rapper known for her debut single “Icy Girl” was interviewed by Jade Gomez from Elite Daily. The singer discusses her biracial identity, college girls, and love in the interview.

Saweetie, real name Diamonté Harper, was raised by a Filipino-Chinese mother and an African-American father. She was aware of her identity as a biracial woman living in predominantly white areas.

As her fame grew, some people thought it was their duty to debate her racial identity online, making it very difficult for the singer to let their judgment not affect her.

Saweetie explains how growing up with two cultures has helped her realize that even though two groups of people are different, they should be respected.

Another topic discussed was the rapper’s proudness of her college degree (communications and business). You will hear how she mentions her education, her degree, and her smartness. Her purpose in including her education in songs is to broaden the conception of a college girl.

As with her racial identity, her degree was getting critiqued because of their conception of a college girl. Some might think a good college girl means someone that went to a private university and graduated on time and doesn’t curse. However, she doesn’t have a problem with any of these stereotypes.

The last topic touched was love. Saweetie is currently in a relationship with Quavo, a member of the rap trio Migos. Gomez asked about their relationship and what Saweetie thinks to be the secret to healthy love. The singer replied with: “[…] You have to put pride aside and you have to be willing to work through problems through communication, It takes humility to allow yourself to be understood, and that’s essential for growth. I feel like we have to really understand someone to love them because, after the honeymoon phase, it’s just kind of not the honeymoon phase. And if you really love someone, you want to understand them.”

Saweetie is an inspiration and a voice for women. She stands for those who want to pursue higher education, not having women put each other down, and she expresses respect and love between one another.
