New York Governor Andrew Cuomo announced new restrictions on New York gyms, restaurants, and gatherings.

As coronavirus cases continue to surge throughout the United States, Gov. Cuomo acknowledges the state of New York as a vulnerable location. Therefore, during a call with reporters on Wednesday, November 11, Cuomo announced restaurants and bars would not be allowed to serve alcohol after 10 p.m. Along with this, gyms will have to follow the same curfew, and private gatherings must be limited to 10 people.

According to Gov. Cuomo, the state will follow said restrictions as soon as this Friday, November 13. It was clear to officials that the new limits should move forth fast as New York, New Jersey, and Connecticut witnessed a sharp increase in cases.

Back in spring, as the pandemic began to gain traction, New York was one of the top states leading in cases. However, the surge is now nationwide, and according to the COVID Tracking Project, hospitalization has reached 65,368.

Gov. Cuomo has left the responsibility to local governments to ensure the enforcement of new restrictions. Mayor Bill de Blasio of New York City reinforced the Governors announcements by expressing on Twitter, “This is our last chance to stop a second wave. We can do it, but we have to act now.” The Mayor also stated that the city’s seven-day average positive testing rate is 2.52%, which the city saw this past July.

The Governor tried to alleviate the situation by saying, “It’s tough on bars and restaurants, it’s tough on gyms, it’s tough on everyone. I would say we are within sight of the finish line; the vaccine has been discovered, it has to be perfected, it has to be operationalized, but we see the finish line.” It is apparent hope and resilience is what Gov. Cuomo wants the citizens of his state to rely on until we can cross that finish line.
