Ireland and India Help Celebrate the Victory of President-Elect Joe Biden and Vice President-Elect Kamala Harris
When President-elect Joe Biden claimed the election of President of United States, it seemed the world breathed a sigh of relief.
Not only were there celebrations in the streets throughout the country, but our allies across the world celebrated along with us. The last four years have been full of uncertainty when it comes to trade, immigration, climate change, and international security. By voting for Joe Biden, we voted to restore Democracy, and our allies are grateful for our choice. Although Donald Trump is in denial about the results, the U.S. is moving forward, and the rest of the world is welcoming us back with open arms.
British Prime Minister, Boris Johnson tweeted his congratulations to Biden and Harris on Tuesday morning, stating that he was looking forward to working with the new administration on shared priorities.
In Ireland, the Saturday newscast ended with a clip to congratulate the President-elect. Biden narrates a video while images of America are shown. Behind clips of protests and celebrations, a message of hope is being delivered. Biden has been able to trace his Irish roots back to the early 1800s. Murals for Biden have shown up in Ballina, Ireland, the home of his ancestors.

Thulasendrapuram, the ancestral village in India from which VP-elect Harris is from, had celebrations of their own. Posters with Harris’ image are plastered on walls and telephone poles. Firecrackers were set off and prayers were held. Harris’ mother, Shyamala Gopalan, immigrated to America from India in 1958. Jamaican’s danced in the streets as they celebrated their representation in the White House, as Harris’ father immigrated from the island in 1961.

In Canada, people poured into the streets to celebrate. Days later, celebrations continue in the U.S., with tears of joy, dancing, shouting, and more. Not since the election of the nation’s first Black president, Barack Obama has there been such an outcry of joy. Along with Americans, Trump has now seen the rest of the world’s rejection of his corruption and sullying of the country’s reputation. At last, it feels like we can move progressively towards the future of the free world.
