Former Glee star Matthew Morrison is set to play the Grinch in the new Dr. Seuss: The Grinch Musical! on NBC this December, and here’s what you need to know.

Just in time for the holiday season, NBC is bringing audiences a new musical based on the classic children’s book How the Grinch Stole Christmas! by Dr. Seuss. The musical will air live on television on December 9 at 8:00 PM ET/PT from the Troubadour Theatre in London. The new Christmas-themed musical will feature a book and lyrics written by Tim Mason, with music by Mel Marvin.

Dr. Seuss: The Grinch Musical! will feature famous songs including “You’re a Mean One, Mr. Grinch” and “Welcome Christmas.” In a statement to the public, Morrison detailed that his aim for the production is, “to bring some Who-ville magic to this holiday season and, while the pandemic presents some challenges in bringing a stage production to life, we are excited to present a unique version of this seasonal favorite in a new creative and imaginative way.”

In addition to Morrison, who is primarily known for his work in the musical TV show Glee, the cast for the NBC musical includes Denis O’Hare (known for his work in Big Little Lies), Booboo Stewart (known for his work in Descendants 3), and Amelia Minto (known for her work in The Lost Girls). An ensemble comprised of talented actors from the West End will also be involved in the production. NBC previously put on musicals in recent years including The Sound of Music, Peter Pan, RENT, Hairspray, and Grease.

The new musical has incited both positive and negative reviews. Fans have expressed their displeasure about the upcoming musical on Twitter following the announcement of the production.

Although we cannot see the musical in person, we are happy that theater is still alive and that the cast and crew have been given the opportunity to perform, despite the COVID-19 pandemic. We look forward to seeing the new Christmas-themed musical next month.
