Selena Gomez to Portray Silvia Vásquez-Lavado in Elgin James’ ‘In the Shadow of the Mountain’

Selena Gomez has just been tapped to play trailblazing mountaineer Silvia Vásquez-Lavado for an upcoming biopic.
In The Shadow of the Mountain tells Vásquez-Lavado’s story of being the first Peruvian woman to summit Mt. Everest and the first openly-gay woman to complete the Seven Summits. It is based on her upcoming memoir of the same name.

Scott Budnick’s company One Community is producing alongside Donna Gigliotti. Elgin James has been picked to write and direct the film. In a statement, Gigliotti spoke of her excitement to work with both Gomez and Vasquez-Lavado for the film.
“Silvia is a force of nature,” Gigliotti said. “Scott and I are so excited to work with Elgin and Selena to tell this story of resilience, courage, adventure and humanity.”

Gigliotti previously won a best picture Academy Award for Shakespeare in Love and helped produce Oscar-winning films such as Hidden Figures and Silver Linings Playbook.
This has also been a successful year for Gomez, as the singer and actress is set to star in an upcoming horror film titled Dollhouse and will also appear alongside Steve Martin and Martin Short in Only Murders in the Building.
