‘Wonder Woman 1984’ to Be Released on Christmas Day to Theaters and HBO Max
Delayed several times due to COVID-19, Wonder Woman 1984 is finally coming to theaters and homes.
The film will be released not only in theaters on Christmas Day but also to HBO Max subscribers, where it will be available for a month at no extra cost to the subscriber before leaving the platform. This is the first film to be available both in theaters and on a streaming service at the same time.

“As we navigate these unprecedented times, we’ve had to be innovative in keeping our businesses moving forward while continuing to super-serve our fans,” said Ann Sarnoff, Chair and CEO, WarnerMedia Studios and Networks Group, in an official statement. “This is an amazing film that really comes to life on the big screen and, working with our partners in the exhibition community, we will provide that option to consumers in the U.S. where theaters are open. We realize that a lot of consumers can’t go back to the movies due to the pandemic, so we also want to give them the option to see Wonder Woman 1984 via our HBO Max platform.“
Originally scheduled to be released in 2019, the Wonder Woman sequel has gone through many release date changes. It was moved up from December to November 2019 before getting pushed back to June 2020 because of the success the first Wonder Woman had in the summer. The pandemic then pushed the date further back, from August 2020 to October 2, 2020. Warner Brothers have stated that the film will get a full theatrical run.
The film stars Gal Gadot once again in the role of Diana Prince/Wonder Woman, an immortal Amazon princess warrior. She is joined by co-stars from the first film Chris Pine, Connie Nielsen, and Robin Wright, plus Kristen Wiig as Cheetah and Pedro Pascal as Max Lord.

The news comes amongst reports of other films facing setbacks and delays. Another anticipated 2020 film, Denis Villeneuve’s Dune adaptation, has been pushed back from December to October of next year. Disney also announced that Death on the Nile, adapted from an Agatha Christie novel, had been delayed until 2021 as well.
