Shawn Mendes and Justin Bieber’s Collaborative Single ‘Monster’ and Music Video Is Officially Out
Shawn Mendes and Justin Bieber dropped their collaborative single, “Monster,” along with a powerful music video that broke the internet.
In support of Mendes’ highly-anticipated album Wonder, he released “Monster” featuring Justin Bieber as the second official single from his upcoming fourth studio album. The Canadian popstars premiered an eye-opening music video that details the downfall of stardom on November 19 at midnight. During an interview with Zane Lowe, Mendes opened up about the inspiration behind the track “It’s about how society can put celebrities up on a pedestal and watch them fall and it seems to be this entertainment thing. And it’s hard.”
Fans were originally teased by Shawn Mendes and Justin Bieber leading up to the debut of the “Monster” music video. On November 16, they shared a snippet of dimly-lit outdoor scenes and a huge white staircase as calming instrumentals play in the background of the shot. Following the 13-second clip, Mendes posted another quick video that shows him in a white t-shirt walking towards the camera. While Bieber revealed the collaborative single’s beautiful cover art that shows the pair sitting down on a platform looking off to the sky.
However, the wait is officially over and everyone is obsessing over the music video.
The “Monster” music video follows Shawn Mendes and Justin Bieber as they confront their anxiety-ridden mind of potentially failing their loved ones and supporters. They are shown pacing around in circles, grabbing their head and looking directly towards the camera while on top of the white staircase in the dark, gloomy forest. It’s a vulnerable music video that reveals the popstar’s inner-thoughts of celebrities being viewed as media entertainment when they ultimately fail.
The music video, “Monster” was directed by Colin Tilley, who has also previously worked with Justin Bieber, Halsey, J Balvin and other talented artists.
In the song, we hear Mendes and Bieber singing about being put on a pedestal and the damage that can come with that. The heartbreaking lyrics show the vulnerabilities of fame as Mendes sings “Fill me up with confidence, I say what’s in my chest / Spill my words and tear me down until there’s nothing left.” The song continues by Bieber explaining his rise and downfall of fame when singing “I was fifteen when the world put me on a pedestal / I had big dreams shows and making memories / Made some bad moves trying to act cool, upset by their jealously.”
The moving music video has amassed over 5 million views within the first 12 hours of its release. “Monster” is the second single and music video released from Wonder following the self-titled track “Wonder.” The long-awaited album will feature 14 tracks that will include the two singles which will be released on December 4.
