Tom Holland Tackles Dark Epic ‘Cherry,’ Produced by AGBO Films With Anthony and Joe Russo Directing
2021 will be a blow-out year for Tom Holland as he leads multiple new films, including the dark and twisted film about PTSD and addiction, Cherry.
Holland graced our screens in a big way as Spider-Man in Marvel Studios’ Captain America: Civil War. This was also his first round with well-known directing duo, Anthony and Joe Russo. He came across as sweet and youthful, a very little fish in a very big pond, but that role quickly showed just how truly talented he is.

In only a few short years, he has managed to expand his range as an actor with leading roles in many different genres: a southern gothic thriller in Devil All the Time, a sci-fi young adult film in Chaos Walking, and a darkly humorous, coming-of-age story in Cherry.
Holland plays the titular character Cherry as he goes through fifteen years of his life; from a college dropout to an Army medic, to an addict that starts robbing banks to pays for his debts. Certainly a sharp turnaround from the quiet, timid Peter Parker we know and love; although, we will be seeing him continue that role as well in the third Spider-Man film, which is currently filming.

The directors talked to Vanity Fair about how the film is organized stating, “The movie’s broken up into six chapters that reflect those different periods, and each one has a different tone.” Their goal is to make the audience empathize with the struggles of Cherry; if they can understand him, they can understand the struggles an addicted person is going through. The creators and author of the novel Nico Walker want to focus on spreading this narrative to increase awareness about opioid addiction.
