TIME Magazine Adds the Movement for Racial Justice That Sparked From the Murder of George Floyd to Person of the Year Shortlist
For their annual Person of the Year honor, TIME Magazine has included the movement for racial justice that sparked the murder of George Floyd as one of the finalists, and here’s what you need to know.
TIME Magazine has several finalists for their 2020 Person of the Year, and many of the candidates have caused a lot of public discourse. In particular, some people have expressed their anger online that the magazine has not directly named Floyd, an African-American man who was murdered by police in May, as one of the people on their list. Rather, they have indicated that they have nominated Floyd for Person of the Year by listing “the movement for racial justice” which was sparked by his untimely death.

The four finalists for TIME’s Person of 2020 include President-elect Joe Biden, former President Donald Trump, frontline health care workers, and Dr. Anthony Fauci, and the movement for racial justice (George Floyd). According to the TIME Magazine reader poll, people have chosen to recognize essential workers during the COVID-19 pandemic as the people of the year. Dr. Fauci came in second in the reader poll for Person of the Year.

This year, TIME has named LeBron James Athlete of the Year, and the South Korean boy band BTS as Entertainer of the Year, This year, TIME also announced their first-ever Kid of the Year, 15-year-old Gitanjali Rao, a young technology innovator who dreams of a world where kids solve all kinds of problems.
On December 10, at 10 PM ET on NBC, TIME will announce who they will choose to honor as Person of the Year.
