Time magazine has named Joe Biden, president-elect, and Kamala Harris, vice president-elect as Person of the Year for 2020.

This duo made history with their win against Donald Trump on Nov. 7. Harris is not only the first woman but the first Black and first South Asian vice president-elect.

“This will be the test of the next four years: Americans who haven’t been this divided in more than a century elected two leaders who have bet their success on finding common ground,” Time editor-in-chief Edward Felsenthal said. “The odds may be long. But it will be among the most critical chapters in the arduous quest for a more perfect union.”

The tradition of awarding an influential person the title of Person of the Year started back in 1927 when it was known as Man of the Year. The title was later changed to a person instead of a man to be more inclusive and change along with the times. Person of the Year can be awarded to any individual, group, movement, or idea that influenced the world positively or negatively.

The award has since expanded into four additional categories, beginning last year. The Zoom CEO Eric Yuan was named Businessperson of the Year for connecting people via video call in a time of distance during the COVID-19 crisis. Dr. Anthony Fauci, Assa Traoré, Porche Bennett-Bey, frontline health workers, and racial-justice organizers were all named Guardian of the Year. LeBron James, National Basketball Association star, was named Athlete of the Year. BTS, a Korean pop boy band, was also named Entertainer of the Year.

“For changing the American story, for showing that the forces of empathy are greater than the furies of division, for sharing a vision of healing in a grieving world, Joe Biden and Kamala Harris are TIME’s 2020 Person of the Year,” Felsenthal said. We are thrilled to see this amazing duo accept this honorable award.
