Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell Finally Acknowledges Joe Biden as President-Elect
Mitch McConnell has now finally acknowledged and congratulated Joe Biden as President-Elect, six weeks after the presidential election.
From Kentucky, McConnell is a Senate Republican Leader who the Republican party has elected consecutively since 2014. This unanimous election has made McConnell the longest-serving leader in history. On December 15, the Senate Leader has recognized Joe Biden and Kamala Harris as the incoming President-Elect and Vice President-Elect.
Tuesday morning, McConnell took the Senate floor speaking on this year’s general election, explaining, “the legal and constitutional processes have continued to play out since then.” McConnell continued, “this morning, our country has officially a president-elect and a vice president-elect.”

The Senate Leader cognized that many citizens hoped there would be a change in the results, “but our system of government has a process,” McConnell said, “to determine who will be sworn in on January 20.” He continued by congratulating President-Elect Biden, elaborating, “[he] is no stranger to the Senate. He’s devoted himself to public service for many years.”
McConnell proceeded to acknowledge Vice President-Elect Harris’s historic accomplishment. He assessed, “Beyond our differences, all Americans can take pride that our nation has a female vice president-elect for the first time.”

After McConnell’s acknowledgment, Vice President-Elect Harris spoke on the topic in an interview with Robin Roberts on ABC’s Good Morning America. Harris responded to McConnell by saying, “I think it’s critically important that the leaders of our government, especially those who are elected to the highest offices, that we dedicate ourselves to a peaceful transition of power, and to an adherence to, and a respect for, the Constitution of the United States and our electoral system.” The Vice President-Elect elaborated as she said, “It would have been better if it were earlier but it happened, and that’s what’s most important … Let’s move forward. And where we can find common purpose and common ground, let’s do that.”
With McConnell’s speech, there is hope that our nation can finally move forward into the next chapter peacefully. Despite the differences between our political parties, as Harris said, there must be a “common purpose and common ground” found.
