On a historic day for the United States, Donald Trump has been impeached from Presidency for a second time, in the most bi-partisan impeachment vote ever.

While most of us are not history buffs, there are some facts about our country’s past that affected today’s vote. As of today, Donald Trump holds half of the country’s impeachments as only two other individuals have been impeached. The first was Andrew Jackson in 1868 where he was charged with eleven articles of impeachment mostly due to his attempts to overpowering Congress. However, he remained in power until his term ended as the second vote did not remove him from office like President Trump’s first impeachment.

The second impeachment occurred under President Bill Clinton due to his inappropriate behavior with a White House intern however he was also not removed from office. Today’s vote for impeachment was based on the insurrection of Capitol Hill on January 6 by violent domestic extremists.

Today’s session of the House included impassioned debating from both sides as Democrats stated their grievance with the abuse of power to start a coup and Republicans agreed that the violence was an injustice but did not believe the impeachment would not make an impact as Trump would already be out of office and that these articles of impeachment were not following proper protocol.

However, in a surprising twist of events, all voting Democrats and ten Republicans voted to impeach which reached the threshold of votes. While the trial to impeach will occur after Biden’s inauguration, it is more likely Trump could be punished for his actions as Republicans are breaking ranks away from his support.
