Jazmine Sullivan has just released a 19-minute concert on NPR Music, showcasing a few songs from her latest album, Heaux Tales.

On January 8, singer-songwriter Jazmine Sullivan was featured on NPR Music, putting on an incredible Tiny Desk Concert. Her voice against the acoustic strings and piano keys is enough to fill any listener’s ears with bliss. Sporting a classy looking jumper, within a dimly lit room, Jazmine looks beautiful as ever, while giving us a free, quality performance.

The video begins with Sullivan partially singing her introduction, while transitioning right into her song, “Bodies”. Here is where listeners get their first taste of her smooth and captivating vocals. The runs and high notes work to show off her complex range while giving the song an effortless jazzy feeling. The background instruments then move into her next song “The Other Side”. It begins with several emotional riffs before she begins to sing about her desire to live a different life.

After the first two songs, Jazmine takes a short breather to introduce her first single from her newest project. “Lost one” is possibly the most powerful track in this performance; it details a rather painful breakup while using her voice to convey the harsh yet relatable lyrics. The singer then goes into one of her older, more recognizable songs; “Let It Burn”. While the tone is a lot more upbeat than the previous track, she still retains the classical jazz/R&B style, all while giving the audience a fun throwback. Sullivan finishes the segment with a collaborative song; “Girl Like Me”, featuring H.E.R. The two women’s individual voices, combined with their perfect harmony, make for a great ending to a thrilling Tiny Desk Concert.

Most of the songs performed in this video are a part of Jazmine Sullivan’s newest project; Heaux Tales. The album is meant to shed light on the realities of relationships, social norms, and self-worth; it features numerous testimonies from women of various backgrounds.
