Donald Trump’s second impeachment has officially taken place, making him the first president to be impeached twice in one term.

After a terrifying riot that occurred on January 6, Donald Trump has been heavily scrutinized for inciting his supporters to storm the capitol building. Despite being impeached in 2019 for abuse of power, the House of Representatives voted to impeach him once again; this time on the account of incitement and insurrection. Donald Trump is the first president to have been successfully impeached twice. Still, in order to completely remove him from office, the Senate must conduct a trial, which could happen before or after Biden’s upcoming inauguration.

It comes to no surprise that all 222 Democrats within the house voted in favor of the impeachment. Many Democrats have spoken out against the president for his role in the events that have unfolded against the capitol. Trump also appears to be losing the favor of the Republican party. A total of 10 Republicans also voted in favor of impeachment. Liz Cheney, a notable Republican House Representative, indicated beforehand, among several other Republicans, that she would be voting against the president.

This decision is only the beginning of a bigger process, however. With Joe Biden‘s inauguration coming up in less than a week, one may wonder what the point is of removing Trump from office. It is entirely possible that the trial could be held after Biden becomes the new president, meaning the trial’s purpose would not be to kick Trump out of office. Rather, it would determine whether Trump is able to run for president in the future.
