Here Are the Women Breaking Gender and Race Barriers in Hollywood and Claiming Their Seat at the Table
Film is an industry that until recently, has lacked the performance of women’s abilities. In 2019 a quick rise of women began, creating a significant change in the presentation of movies.
Given that since the beginning of the film world, men have been behind every nugatory detail, the barriers of sexism have peaked. Around the globe, women have given themselves an entry-way into mainstream, Indie, online, and television platforms.
Through the #MeToo movement in 2019, many women in the film industry have reported male directors, producers and more, such as Harvey Weinstein, who have been involved in precursing sexual acts or of predatorial exposial acts.
With many previously highly-regarded male prospects in ex-communication with the film world, women were able to successfully bring themselves into a new work field.
“In 2019-2020, the percentages of women working as directors and writers on independently and domestically produced films continued to climb, reaching recent historic highs.”

This field began changing, crafting, and creating a buzz around the ever-changing white male-dominated field. With women now being at least accepted the formation and culture of movie-making have evolved.

In the past few years, many more women have become producers, directors, editors, and more for behind the scenes roles of films. Previously, these areas of expertise were dominated by a mere 91% in 1998 and 87% in 2019 by men, according to The Celluloid Ceiling Research.
This ongoing research study has given numerous explorations of which women in certain areas have gained traction. For example, in mainstream media, women writers have increased gloriously since the initial study in 1998. Women almost dominate the Indie film scene having a plethora of credits, over 88,000.
According to womenandhollywood.com, “In 2019-2020, the percentages of women working as directors and writers on independently and domestically produced films continued to climb, reaching recent historic highs. Women comprised 38% of directors, up from 33% in 2018-19, and 29% in 2017-18. Women accounted for 35% of writers, up from 32% in 2018-19 and 26% in 2017-18.”
This excerpt of data gives way to how women have been continuing to outreach into filmmaking. The growing numbers show how advocating for change as well as refusing to allow a continuous trend of male-dominated fields, proclaims how women in this industry have formed a renaissance of a new creation.
Despite women engaging as well as beginning to dominate a mostly male-field, the product of change still has a long way to go. Filmmaking not only needs to erase sexist barriers but also needs to create space and change for all upcoming points of view, making room for more perspectives.
We are excited to see more women taking behind the scenes roles in a previously male-dominated field. For more information on women progressing in the film industry click: here, here, or here
