Lorna Simpson Collabs with Global Star Rihanna for Unique Photo Collage Cover of Essence
Lorna Simpson photographed artist and entrepreneur Rihanna in a glorious light for the January/February 2021 issue of Essence magazine.
On January 14, Essence released the cover of their first issue of 2021, a collaboration between Rihanna and Lorna Simpson. Essence told readers that in their 50-year span, this will be the first piece commissioned by Simpson, who is known for her artistic ability to combine photos and words to convey her messages. For Essence, Simpson created a stunning 12-page portfolio titled “Of Earth and Sky.”

In an article from Essence covering the issue, Simpson states, “[Collaborating] with Rihanna and ESSENCE magazine is quite incredible,” as an artist, I’m able to deliver these unusual images of someone who is so well-known and so recognizable… It’s an amazing opportunity.”
With the release of some of the iconic photographs, fans everywhere are in awe of the true beauty Simpson was able to capture. Each photo is meant to convey a connection between Rihanna and modern day beauty.
