Released on December 20, 2020,  Jasimi, aka Jaz Sinclair (The Chilling Adventures of Sabrina, Paper Towns) has continuously teased her audience for the music video for her song “Doing Great”. The video was originally released on January 15 and has continuously gained momentum since then.

Visually appealing, the music video features women of all ages, varying from childhood to adulthood. Pastel pinks, baby blues, and cream colors are used throughout the video. This seems to be an ode to how society wants women to be: delicate and fragile.

Pulling out of this trope, the video takes the audience through what society sees as “ugly” for women such as unibrows, unplucked hair, no makeup, the emotional breakthrough as the video expands.

Women of different body shapes, sizes, and ethnicity are shown, giving the export on how disparate every woman is. This rationalization gives the video a pedestal on diversity.

Jasimi, who’s running through the desert, is pulled through the oblivion of dancers. With sharp, elaborate movements, the portrayal of life’s changes in order to drum self-purpose is shown evidently.

Towards the end, the vibe quickly switches to pleasure and satisfaction. The palate becomes vibrant with oranges, greens, and purples, giving the aura of lively balance as well as freedom.

The R&B beats and breathy musicality give Jasimi a powerful vocal range. Sweet sounding lyrics give Jasimi the ability to present the storyline of how a woman gives herself to society in a certain way.

Jasimi sings, “She stays patient, Always gracious, Holds her tongue, Just to behave. Smile keeps bleeding, Eyes misleading, She tucks all her secrets away.”

Dissecting the song, the lyrics parallel’s how one woman lives her life through her own eyes versus what society wants her to do. “I’m feeling kinda lazy, My hair is kinda crazy, Banana in my oatmeal, I bought myself daises,” Jasimi continues.

The change of self-relationship is evident as the song rapports. “Doing Great” seems to give evidence that self-love creates a habitat for change for oneself. This song proceeds with how having one person as the center of one’s universe can be demeaning.

“I’m doing better now, You’re not the center now, Drive with the windows down, And I feel great, ooh.”

The bridge change in the song leads into a low toned talk. Her voice goes from a sense of hurt to the change of having a clear smile. This smile proves happiness can be achieved by taking one’s life into their own hands.

Jasimi relays the message of this song with extreme clarity: creating a world revolving around one person can be incredibly destructive; having to be in their perception rather than one’s own.

To truly be doing great, one needs to bring forth their own sense of life imagery. Without this, the person may be unable to give themself a purpose, unable to empower themself.

Having the capacity to charge one’s own stamina with their own importance allows conclusion’s of how other’s perceptions are not the truth.
