“I’ve been listening to her [Selena] since I was way below single digits,” Serratos told People. “I’ve always looked up to and really admired her, but I never thought I would have the opportunity to play her. This woman [Selena] was a pioneer. She was way before her time.”

“Transitioning into mainstream pop music was not easy for a Mexican woman in the ’80s, but she did it gracefully and with such strength,” Serratos told People. “It’s something that I really look up to. I wanted to portray her spirit above anything,” she added. “That’s why I love her. I think that’s why we all love her.”

Part one of the series consisted of Selena’s life growing up in a Mexican-American household, and the struggles that followed. The series will continue by showing fans a look into the singer’s journey in handling her newfound success as the most successful female Latin artist of all time, up until her tragic death at the age of 23.

Fans are eager to continue to witness the life of the famous artist. Part two of Selena: The Series premieres on Netflix May 14.
