Batwoman is back with an all-new season filled with plenty of action and mystery as we try to figure out what happened to Kate Kane. We spoke to star Meagan Tandy all about what to expect.

Meagan Tandy portrays Sophie Moore in The CW series, launching its second season with its premiere on Sunday, January 17. Batwoman’s characters are the same ones we know and love from the DC comics. This season, we will be introduced to Ryan Wilder (Javicia Leslie), who discovers Kate Kane’s Batsuit and steps into the hero role in her own way. Sophie is dealing with everything in her world being thrown into question after losing Kate again.

Read our exclusive interview with Meagan Tandy below to find out more on big moments in the new season, inclusivity in the entertainment industry, how Sophie will deal with Kate’s disappearance, and more.

GLITTER: Batwoman returned for season two on January 17, how would you describe the tone of this new season?
MEAGAN: Oh, man, the tone of season two is not only exciting, but it’s definitely going to be very, very action-packed. So, you know, a lot of people might be thinking like, “all right, cool, we have to spend some time to get to know Ryan,” which we will, but that does not mean that the action, excitement, and drama are not going to be right there, right off the bat. So get ready.

GLITTER: Sophie is going to be struggling with Kate Kane’s disappearance, what do you think the result of this will be for her and what will it teach her?
MEAGAN: So Sophie is going to definitely be going through it. The fact that Kate, right off the bat, has disappeared, she is going to be absolutely devastated. This is gonna rock her world and just completely shatter her because the biggest lesson that she’s now learning is don’t leave anything ever left unsaid. And that’s the unfortunate thing with Kate and she is they both have so many things that just did not get said. So now that she’s gone, she’s like, “what now?”

GLITTER: What do you think is Sophie’s most powerful quality?
MEAGAN:
So Sophie’s most powerful quality is just the fact that she literally has a heart of gold. She’s very, very empathetic. I think, especially being on the Crows because the Crows can definitely be a little like, “roar.” But Sophie kind of brings in that soft side of the Crows, and not just because she has to, it’s because that’s also what she embodies. I also think that’s what Kate really liked about her, or loved about her.

GLITTER: How would you describe the importance of strong female representation, especially when it comes to series leads?
MEAGAN:
So strong female representation is huge! Like it is so my jam. We have to have it. It has to be very, very much like at the forefront of all things that we do because, you know, for decades it’s always about the man. And I always say to people, although I absolutely love Batman, more people know about Batman than they do Batwoman. So that’s why I feel like our show— it’s important that people are getting to know Batwoman, because having a strong female centerfold character is huge, especially one that’s Black and LGBTQ.

GLITTER: What would you like to see more of when it comes to diversity in the entertainment industry?
MEAGAN:
Hmm. So as far as the entertainment industry, something that I would love to just see more of is more diverse superheroes, just in general. When I think literally, besides Batman, and I think of all of the superheroes that I absolutely love, they are white men. And although that’s wonderful, white men are also heroes, it’s just that’s all that we ever pump up. So I would love to just see more diversity in who we allow to be the superhero to save the day.

GLITTER: What would you say the biggest jaw-dropping moment of season one was for you and what sort of big moments can fans expect from season two?
MEAGAN: That’s a really really good question. Ok, well, the biggest jaw-dropping moment for Sophie in season one was Kate’s return to Gotham because they had parted ways at point rock because of the unfortunate rule that you can’t be LGBTQ in the military academy. And so they split on these really awful terms, once again, so much left unsaid. Now all of a sudden, episode one, season one, BOOM, there’s Kate. So for her, it was just like, “oh, my God, that’s my woman. She’s back.” So I think that was definitely the biggest moment for her. The biggest jaw-dropping moment for Sophie in season two is that now Kate’s gone, again. It’s like she was there and now she’s not. And so, like I said, it’s just all of these things that are just left unsaid. Of course, with it always happening, with the love of her life, you know, with the woman that she loves, it’s just drama and it’s sad and emotional.

GLITTER: Are we going to see Sophie get some love in the new season?
MEAGAN: Yeah, so now that Kate has disappeared, who I believe is definitely Sophie’s long lost love, she is currently in a relationship with Julia. So whether or not that’s going to continue and they might just end up down the aisle, you’ll have to just tune in and see.

GLITTER: If you could pick, which superhero would you love for Sophie to get to meet?
MEAGAN:
Oh, boy, wow, that’s a really good question. I mean, it’s always Batman, but I feel like I need to expand this. So for Sophie Moore, I would absolutely love for her to meet Wonder Woman because let’s just be honest, Wonder Woman is just badass. She’s awesome. She’s sexy. I could see Sophie having a little bit of a crush on her, but I think just in general, I think they would do really well together.

GLITTER: Glitter has a celebrity #SelfLoveCampaign. What does self-love mean to you?
MEAGAN:
So self-love just means you are literally just coming into your own. And this is really awesome because I feel like I’m literally doing this right now. I wanted to start 2021 off, just like being very, very mindful and actually just making sure that you take time for yourself. Like self-love can definitely be exercising, grabbing a frappuccino, eating some pizza; these are all the things I do. But also just like taking a moment, pausing your day, and just sitting there; just being in stillness and meditating that’s self-love.

GLITTER: Do you have any new projects coming up that you can discuss?
MEAGAN: Really my latest project is really just Batwoman. I am always usually doing something with my foundation for Girl Talk to help empower young women. Unfortunately, I couldn’t do my convention last season because of the pandemic, but we’re actually trying to figure out how we can get a virtual convention going this summer. So we are in the works of that right now.

GLITTER: What are the best social media platforms for fans to follow you on?
MEAGAN:
Yeah, so the best social media platform really is Instagram. I’m not like a huge Instagram fan, but you can see me on there. I’m always constantly trying to repost motivational things. And @theempiregirls, that’s my initiative that I try to just get out there to empower young women; that is also a handle you’ll find myself or my social media rep.
