HiddenLight Productions, a production company founded by former Secretary of State Hillary Clinton, Chelsea Clinton, and Sam Branson, has secured the television rights to author Gayle Tzemach Lemmon’s unreleased book, The Daughters of Kobani: A Story of Rebellion, Courage, and Justice.

The news of the acquisition comes after a bidding war with other productions. A network is not yet attached to the project, but we know the story will be transformed into a TV series. Penguin Press will release The Daughters of Kobani: A Story of Rebellion, Courage, and Justice on February 16.

Lemmon used in-depth interviews and on-ground reporting to craft this story of the all-female Kurdish militia. The militia who fought (and won) against the Islamic State of Iraq and Syria (ISIS) in Northern Syria, cemented their political beliefs and brought global attention to the area.

Hillary Clinton saidThe Daughters of Kobani is an extraordinary account of brave, defiant women fighting for justice and equality,” and that her company was created “to celebrate heroes — sung and unsung alike — whose courage is too often overlooked, and we could not be more thrilled to bring this inspiring story to viewers around the world.”

Lemmon is a journalist and an adjunct senior fellow at the Council on Foreign Relations Women and Foreign Policy Program. She previously wrote 2011’s The Dressmaker of Khair Khana and 2015’s Ashley’s War: The Untold Story of a Team of Women Soldiers on the Special Ops Battlefield – both New York Times’ Bestsellers.

Last year, Deadline announced that NBCUniversal, Lesli Linka Glatter, Molly Smith Metzler, Bruna Papandrea, Natalie Krinsky, and Reese Witherspoon would bring Ashley’s War: The Untold Story of a Team of Women Soldiers on the Special Ops Battlefield to the big screen.

The Clintons and Branson launched HiddenLight productions in December 2020 “to tell stories that celebrate the best of the human spirit.” We can’t wait to see how they work to portray this courageous story of The Daughters of Kobani. The book will be released on February 16 and in the meantime, you can pre-order now.
