REVIEW: ‘The Little Things’ Starring Denzel Washington, Jared Leto, and Rami Malek Hits Theaters and HBO Max January 29
This Oscar-winning cast will leave you on the edge of your seat in Warner Brother’s new psychological thriller, The Little Things.
The Little Things is a must watch as three heavy-hitting actors come together for a riveting and haunting psychological crime thriller masterpiece. Denzel Washington, Rami Malek, and Jared Leto take audiences on a gripping ride of suspense and fear from the beginning to the very end.
Washington portrays Kern County Deputy Sheriff Joe “Deke” Deacon, and Malek stars as LA Sheriff Department, Sergeant Jim Baxter. We see the two team up to catch a suspected serial killer (Leto), who is treating the entire interrogation as a twisted mind game. Both Washington and Malek elegantly guide you through the labyrinth of conundrums and murder victims with a backdrop of dark and retro sets. Leto is eerily convincing and chilling in this dark thriller.
Denzel commented on what attracted him to his character, stating, “If it ain’t on the page, it ain’t on the stage, so I just read the script and found it interesting.” He added, “…and needless to say, it was the opportunity, and I’ll use the word again, Jared; the opportunity to work with these two younger than me, great, great actors and to interpret John’s script.”
When asked why his character trusted Joe’s instincts despite knowing his past, Malik replied, “Personally, if I see wisdom and great instincts and experience in front of me, well I lean on that, and so I think that was inherent in the script. For someone who is struggling in a case where it’s so, so much building up, so much responsibility, to have the ability to lean on someone who had clearly been there before and seen something quite dark, there was almost a need to bring that person into your life and seek counsel from them. So you knew in a sense, I think Baxter knew in a sense, it could get him down a harmful route, but there was something advantageous to working with this man that could help him solve this very difficult puzzle.”
Leto commented as well on what made him say yes to the role, stating, “Well, these guys here on the Zoom today were really the reason that I wanted to be a part of it. Like I said before, John Lee Hancock wrote a great script. I guess when you look for a great director, great script, great art, great producer, great actors; this just ticked all the boxes. It made it impossible to say no to. There was a moment where I did think, like, I’ve kind of walked on the darker side of the universe a lot in my career, maybe it’s time to not do that again, but after just seeing the opportunity here, I just couldn’t say no.”
The film was directed by John Lee Hancock, who used his own original screenplay, three decades old and written in the early ’90s. You watch the film with a timestamp of quirky dated details and imagery throughout each scene, and without the technological advancements and crime scene investigative tools of today. This gives the film grit and character, which really puts you deep into the moment. Along with Hancock, The Little Things is produced by Oscar and Emmy-winning producer Mark Johnson.
Warner Bros. Pictures’ The Little Things will be released on January 29 both in theaters and on HBO Max.
