Earlier this week on the podcast Grounded with Louis Theroux, FKA Twigs revealed that she had been working on music during the lockdown. She teased her new song “Don’t Judge Me,” the first since the release of her emotional 2019 album MAGDALENE, which featured her hit single “Cellophane.”

This time around, the British singer teamed up with rapper Headie One along with Fred Again.. who produced the track. “Don’t Judge Me” is a heartfelt song that speaks of systemic racism and the difficulties of being Black in the UK. “Officer, am I allowed to breathe here?” is a moving line from Headie One’s verse.

The video is just as compelling as the song, and it features several Black professionals and creatives who FKA Twigs highlighted in a recent Instagram post. She helped to co-direct the video alongside Emmanuel Adjei, the film director for Beyonce’s Black Is King.

Known for her flexibility and captivating dance moves, FKA Twigs does a dance solo in the video which symbolizes her fighting an invisible oppressor. Her outfit also incorporated all Black designers with pieces from fashion retailer FARFETCH, including one from Martine Rose and Virgil Abloh’s Off-White.

Fans are loving both the song and video for “Don’t Judge Me,” and they’re glad that FKA Twigs decided to touch on such an important and relevant issue. It’s especially critical to her to highlight the struggles Black people face in the UK since it’s often glazed over and not discussed in the context of the current Black Lives Matter movement.

FKA Twigs’ latest single has fans even more eager to hear what else she has in store. In the meantime, be sure to go check out the moving video for “Don’t Judge Me” and stream on the available platforms.
