Miley Cyrus Rocks her Tiny Desk Concert From Home

Miley Cyrus and NPR collab for a Tiny Desk (Home) Concert, yet Cyrus stuns not only with vocals, but with a storyline hidden deeper meaning behind the set.

Putting on a seemingly late-90’s-styled show is something Miley Cyrus seems to have down. On January 28, Cyrus and NPR collaborated for a Tiny Desk (Home) Concert.

Typically performed at Bob Boilen’s desk in the NPR Music office, musicians perform a few songs. This year Covid-19 has shaken up how the mini-concerts work. Now, NPR Music is releasing the concerts in a Covid-19 friendly fashion through a series called Tiny Desk (Home) Concerts

The concert starts with a cover of the Mazzy Star song, “Fade into You.” Followed by “Golden G String” and a stripped-down version of her hit “Prisoner,” from her newest album, Plastic Hearts. Cyrus showcases her powerhouse vocals, which have a rock-like influence in tone.

In Cyrus’ true nature, this concert did not go without being a touch dramatic, as per the singer’s reputation. She is seated in a tiny room, lined with mini-paintings, drawings, a bed with hot pink sheets, and a couch covered in a rainbow knit blanket. The set looks to be a doll-house-like room.

In the end, the camera moves to show Cyrus sitting in front of the room, as if she has surpassed the childlike little girl stereotype she had once been put in. Occasional zoom-ins on her face change the camera from being plain to having a 90’s styled video camera quality, perhaps a nod to her 90’s childhood.

NPR Music YouTube channel stated in their description, “As Cyrus sings, it becomes clear that this is her Wonderland – like Alice full of magical cake, she’s grown to exceed her surroundings. By the end of this three-song set, Cyrus reveals that it’s the adolescent enclave that grew too small for her, not the other way around.”

Fans on Twitter took quick notice of her performance.

From her background in the entertainment industry, Cyrus understands that music goes hand in hand with theatrics, and her performances showcase just how well she puts the two together.

Cyrus’ concert, while short, has a great meaning behind it. She has shown that influences can only go so far, emerging from her childhood look. Cyrus continues to grow, as shown through her collaboration with NPR Music, and we look forward to seeing what she has next up her sleeve.
