Sabrina Carpenter started off the month of February with a controversial, yet visually pleasing music video. Her new single, “Skin,” has received lots of attention due to its catchy pop sound and personal lyrics. The song conveys a message of Carpenter speaking her own truth, and not letting criticism get in the way of her life. Prior to the release of her video, Carpenter posted a few sneak peeks on her Instagram, revealing that actor Gavin Leatherwood, from The Chilling Adventures of Sabrina, would be featured in it. Directed by Jason Lester, “Skin” features a series of dramatic scenes and abstract visuals.

Both the song and video portray a situation in which the singer is addressing the stressors in her life while trying to stay happy in a relationship. The music video begins with Carpenter staring out of a window while looking distressed. Her lover, played by Leatherwood, comes to comfort her, as the song plays throughout. A montage begins of them sitting at the table, cuddling together, and laying in bed, all while a storm starts inside their home. As furniture shakes, and as snow and rain fall on them, the two remain unbothered by it. Romantic scenes clash with a growing storm that surrounds them, though Carpenter and Leatherwood remain calm, sharing kisses in the snow, and cuddles in the pouring rain.

Though there are many rumors surrounding the true subject matter of her single, Carpenter has made it clear that “Skin” details the many struggles she’s been through in the past years, with multiple people trying to get ‘under her skin’. Rumors aside, the video and song speak to the hardships and passion the singer has faced, even in tough situations, always managing to make the best of it all and to find beauty even in the pouring rain.
