The tech world has continued to look for new ways to improve sound and power, and with the Tula Mic, the world is buzzing. Tula Mic can be utilized in two ways: a USB-C microphone for computers and cell phones or as a standalone recorder with a built-in battery lasting up to 14 hours. Despite its small stature, the Tula Mic has incredible power.

David Brown the owner and designer of Tula shared more on the amazing qualities of the mic with me on a recent call. He stated, “I wanted it to have several layers, it’s just plug and play for the average person who wants better sound in a zoom meeting, but if it’s for a journalist or a musician or a content creator that has other needs, further needs, I wanted it to have further functionality that could be dug into. So the Tula functions on its own as a mobile recorder and all the function keys, you know, you can see they’re all on the sides of the mic. I purposely didn’t want to use a screen of any kind just for design reasons. I tried to make the functionality and interface as intuitive as possible. So you’ll see that the left LEDs are just letting you know that the mic is working and the right LCD is giving you your gain. So if it starts going into the red, you know, it’s too hot and you can turn it down on the left-hand side where the gain control is. Conversely, if it’s barely blinking, you can turn up the gain.”

David continued on the amazing noise reduction qualities of the Tula stating, “So I thought, OK, new brand entering the market. We have to bring some extra things to the table and beyond what already exists. So, as I said, portability, hopefully, better design, good sound, mobile recording, which is a function most USB mics don’t have. And then I got the idea to try to add some onboard noise reduction because I thought that would be really useful for people if they could make their bedroom or their home office or whatever, sound more like a studio to get rid of that ambient room sound that could be useful. There’s a company in Sweden called Klevgrand that is a very cool Swedish software company and they have a thing called Brusfri, which means noise-free in Swedish. It’s designed for computers and for iPads and phones to do exactly that. But it’s a power-hungry program because it’s designed for things with a lot of CPU and computers. So our firmware guy had to rewrite the code. We made a partnership with them and he rewrote the code to optimize it to the point where it could be embedded on our chip. So, yes, that’s another thing that our competitors don’t have is like a nice easy-to-use gentle noise reduction.

The Tula Mic is designed with a pretty, retro aesthetic that is perfect for anyone. Tula Mic is offered in colors cream, seafoam, red, and black. The size is 89x55x21mm which is roughly the size of a deck of cards which is historically aesthetically pleasing.

We have to say that’s the first thing that caught our eye and David Brown explained why when he told us, “The Golden Ratio, you may know what it is already. It’s 1 by 1.618 Like a rectangle that’s 1 by 1.1618. It’s a ratio that’s found throughout nature. Generally, when you look at a person and find them attractive, it’s because you’re recognizing golden ratios in their face, like how their eyes are positioned compared to their nose or whatever. It exists in many forms, in nature and also in products. So a credit card is the Golden Ratio, large screen televisions and then it’s also incorporated in much subtler ways. Every mic that I’ve ever designed has utilized it in some way and because it’s a rectangle, the Tula is an exact Golden Ratio.

The mic invites nostalgia; Tula comes with a stand with a custom spindle, allowing for smooth movement. The stand also folds for those wishing to hold the portable mic.

The Tula Mic sounds amazing, and its versatility is credited with having two options of pickup patterns — cardioid and omni. The cardioid pattern is best used for those wishing to capture audio from one user; the omni option is best for room sound, such as big events and interviews.

Tula Mic has endless possibilities. If someone decides they want to create their own podcast, record a class lecture, hang out on Clubhouse and sound bomb, or just sharpen their singing skills, the Tula Mic is essential. Check out their website for more info.
