The Golden Globes Just Made History by Nominating Three Female Directors
The Golden Globes has recently announced the nominees for the upcoming award show, and three of them are female directors.
Filmmaking has long been a male-dominated career path. Historically, only five female directors have been nominated for a Golden Globe. Within the last six years, the Golden Globes have faced criticism for its lack of women in the director category, with Natalie Portman even making a funny quip during the 2018 ceremony. “Here are the all-male nominees,” she said while presenting the award on-stage. This makes it all the more surprising that in 2021, we have three female nominees up for best director; Emerald Fennell, Regina King, and Chloe Zhao.
Emerald Fennell is up for her work on Promising Young Woman; a dark thriller about a woman who seeks revenge on behalf of her sexually-assaulted friend. The movie was also written and produced by Fennell, touching on themes of consent and power.
Regina King was nominated for her work on One Night in Miami, which centers around a fictional encounter between Malcolm X, Muhammed Ali, Jim Brown, and Sam Cooke. The movie is based on a stage play written by Kemp Powers, and is the first feature film to be directed by King.
The third woman up for nomination is Chloe Zhao. She is in the running for her work on Nomadland; the story of a woman who, after losing everything she’s cared about, leaves her hometown to go on a journey through the American West.
78 years of the golden globes and there have only been 8 nominations for female directors (3 of them this year) !!! Regina King, Chloé Zhao, Emerald Fennel, let’s keep paving the way sweeties 👏🏻

This is the first time in which the Golden Globes has nominated multiple women for the best director role, making the year 2021 a historical landmark for the award show. The Golden Globes will take place on February 28, and will air on NBC.
