The upcoming film, Robin Roberts Presents: Mahalia will premiere April 3 on Lifetime, starring Danielle Brooks.

Lifetime’s gospel biopic, Robin Roberts Presents: Mahalia will showcase the beautiful and inspiring life of American gospel singer, Mahalia Jackson. The film directed by Kenny Leon and produced by ABC’s Good Morning America anchor, Robin Roberts, will be released Saturday, April 3 on Lifetime.

Jackson was a singer and active supporter of the Civil Rights Movement from New Orleans. She has become one of the most well-known gospel singers in the history of the United States. Jackson’s bestseller, ‘Move on Up a Little Higher’ sold millions of copies and is now in the Grammy Hall of Fame. She even had the opportunity to sing at handfuls of rallies, including the March on Washington in 1963, in hopes to inspire racial equality.

Orange Is The New Black star, Danielle Brooks will play the iconic role of Jackson. Along with Brooks the film will feature Broadway stars, Joaquina Kalukango, Jason Dirden, Olivia Washington, and Rob Demery.

Brooks was destined to play the role of Jackson, as she was always told by her castmates during her Broadway days that she should pursue the character of Jackson. She told Deadline in a late Q&A session, “I had to trust that what was told to me in my spirit. What was given to me was that I was supposed to play Mahalia Jackson.”

The actress shared to Twitter in January a snippet speaking on how much she is inspired by Jackson and is honored to play her in the upcoming film.
