The 1999 classic film The Best Man will be returning to the screen as a limited series starring the original cast.

The Best Man originally came out in 1999 and is a 2-hour romantic comedy directed by Malcolm D. Lee and produced by  Spike Lee, Sam Kitt, and Bill Carraro. The movie features all African-American cast, breaking out careers for notable actresses and actors such as Morris Chestnut, Taye Diggs, Nia Long, Sanaa Lathan, Terrence Howard, and Regina Hall.

The film’s plot follows a group of friends in the late 1990s, notably Harper Stewart (Taye Diggs), who plays a soon-to-be best-selling author who writes his newest novel based on his relationships with his friends. Stewart learns he’s set to become the best man at his friend Lance’s (Morris Chestnut) wedding, and there’s an advance copy of his book soon to become published. Somehow, the advance copy makes it in his ex’s hands, so he must figure a way to keep the situation under control before the wedding, where all of his friends will be in attendance.

Since the first film, The Best Man has branched out into three films. The second, Best Man Holiday, was released in 2013 and is about a group of friends reuniting 15 years later for the holidays. The third film, Best Man Wedding has not been released yet, but according to a statement from Spike Lee in Los Angeles Daily News, The Best Man Wedding has been put on hold, at least for now. It’s a matter of trying to get the right time of year to do it.” An individual with knowledge of the project confirmed Thursday that the film “is currently in development” at Universal, and the studio is working to resolve scheduling issues.

Fans waiting for The Best Man Wedding can now enjoy The Best Man limited series in the meantime. The series will be exclusively featured on the streaming platform Peacock.
