Set within the 1940s, a young girl in Croatia is sent to a concentration camp along with her mother and siblings. Only being 10 years old, Dara must protect herself and her baby brother from the atrocities of their concentration complex, known as Jasenovac.

In the official trailer, Dara is shown having to hand over precious jewelry and valuables to her oppressors; when other victims protest, they are immediately shot with no mercy. She is constantly seen fearing for her life, as people shoot at her and her loved ones. In Jasenovac, the children are placed in their own concentration camps, away from the adults; this forces Dara to become her own adult as she navigates this new world.

Directed by Predrag Antonijevic, the film is made to represent the very real historical details of Jasenovac; a European concentration camp that was located in the independent State of Croatia, and run by an Ustase government. Known as the “Auschwitz of Croatia,” it was the only concentration camp that was not operated by the Germans. The majority of its victims were Serbs, while others were Jews and Roma people.

Antonijevic has stated that there has never been a film that centered around the horrors of Jasenovac; his goal was to give the audience an accurate depiction of what was happening in 1940’s Croatia. The film is based on a true story, with a goal to educate and inspire people to reshape their attitude towards the world.

Dara of Jasenovac is now playing in limited locations, you can check your local theater to see playtimes. Be sure to stay safe when going out.
