As HBO Max expands its original content, they are diving into adult cartoons with a special series all about the smartest member of the Scooby-Doo gang, Velma Dinkley.

Mindy Kaling will both be an executive producer and voice star of the show. It will center around Velma’s backstory before she held a permanent seat in the Mystery Machine. HBO describes it as, “an original and humorous spin that unmasks the complex and colorful past of one of America’s most beloved mystery solvers.”

It’s no surprise that such an iconic figure of pop culture would get her own story after more than fifty years of mystery solving from four teens and one beloved dog. As streaming service wars intensify over new content its no surprise that a company like HBO Max is delving into oldies but goodies like Scooby-Doo.

Mindy Kaling is best known for her first big break as Kelly Kapoor on The Office. Since then she wrote, acted, and produced her own TV show The Mindy Project; she’s acted alongside other big names in films like A Wrinkle in Time, Ocean’s Eight, and Late Night. One of her most recent projects became a Netflix instant hit, Never Have I Ever, which explored the coming of age of an Indian American girl Devi, as she navigates the crazy world of high school based on Kaling’s early days.

We will definitely be hearing more about this show as the cast and plot details begin to build up so stay tuned to find out the next mystery Velma will solve.
