During a Television Critics Association panel that was part of the ongoing 2021 Winter Press Tour, Thompson opened up about the obstacles he faced to get his new single-cam comedy, Kenan. Thompson’s co-stars Don Johnson, Chris Redd, and Kimrie Lewis, executive producers David Caspe and Ken Whittingham, and writer Jackie Clarke all joined Thompson to help with this upcoming show.

“It was a long process, starting with finding someone to settle on the idea with,” Thompson said. “Jackie and I had a similar idea for what kind of show people hadn’t seen before — how to put a new twist on the ‘uplifting father figure’ kind of show.”

The show revolves around a father (Thompson) who recently lost his wife and mother of his two daughters. As Kenan tries to balance his work and family, his well-intentioned father-in-law (Johnson), brother (Redd), and co-workers give their two cents. The idea for the show has been in the works for the past three years. There has been debate about his profession, but Thompson portraying a single father was consistent.

“Three different ideas, three different teams of people,” Thompson said. “Then we pivoted into a morning show idea, and it had a similar energy to what people might expect, given my ‘SNL’ energy.”

The show plans on making its debut on NBC on Tuesday, February 16 at 8:30 p.m. ET.
