Chloe x Halle reimagine a Nigerian folktale about the sun and the moon in a short film by Julie Dash.

Filmmaker Julie Dash, best known for her beautiful and emotional depictions of Black life has recruited the musical duo Chloe x Halle to retell a folktale passed down by the Efik people of southeast Nigeria. The Vogue March 2021 issue will feature the duo as the sun and the moon. The folktale tells the story of why the sun and the moon live in the sky.

The sister duo wears long, dazzling gowns while walking on a rocky beach. The sisters are seen in a variety of stunning pieces. To truly capture the portrayal of the sun and moon, each sister plays one through their outfit selections. Halle portrays the sun in her flowing, golden gown and Chloe portrays the moon in her silvery dress. Their looks are out of this world and have left many people talking.

The tale simply titled Why The Sun and Moon Live in the Sky tells the story of how the sun and moon have come to reside in the sky. The sun would often go to visit the water, and the sun often wondered why the water would never do the same. The sun decides to ask the water and is told that they would need to bring their entire family to the ocean. The sun enlists the help of the moon to build a compound to fit the sun, moon, and the ocean’s whole family, but in a sad twist, all elements cannot fit. For this reason, the sun and moon are forced to live in the sky.

Chloe x Halle are honored to have played a role in the retelling of this Nigerian folktale. Fans can watch the beautiful narration and read the article on Vogue.com.
