Netflix has ordered an eight-episode run for its new live-action Addams Family series from director Tim Burton.

The latest venture for the Addams Family franchise, Wednesday, will center around the eldest child in the family, Wednesday Addams.

The show will see Wednesday as she enrolls at Nevermore Academy in pursuit of mastering her psychic ability. The character will also become embroiled in a 25-year supernatural mystery involving her parents all while trying to thwart a killing spree affecting the town.

While this is the first solo vehicle for the character, Wednesday Addams is a much-beloved pop culture icon.

The character of Wednesday Addams is owned and licensed by MGM/UA Television. It was announced back in October 2020, that the production company, Gough, and Millar were eyeing Burton to helm a show about the iconic character.

Wednesday marks Burton’s first foray into directing for television after over three decades in film. Burton made his name by becoming a mainstay director for gothic fantasy and horror films like 1988’s Beetlejuice, 2005’s Charlie and the Chocolate Factory, and more recently, Miss Peregrine’s Home for Peculiar Children in 2016.

In the 90s, the character of Wednesday Addams rose in popularity largely in part because of Christina Ricci’s portrayal in the 1991 feature film, The Addams Family, and its sequel, Addams Family Values in 1993.

Ricci has become so ingrained with the character, that fans of Ricci’s performance are now hoping the actress plays some role in the television series.

Burton will serve as one of Wednesday’s three show-runners alongside creators Al Gough and Miles Millar (the duo behind Smallville).

While minimal information has been released about the upcoming series, including a release date, fans are already excited for what is in store.
