Laura Marano Uses Sign Language in Her New Music Video for ‘Something To Believe In’
Laura Marano has incorporated American Sign Language into the music video for her new song “Something to Believe In.”
Marano’s sister, Vanessa Marano, starred in Freeform’s Switched at Birth where she played Bay Kennish. The show revolved around two teenage girls who were raised by the wrong family. Vanessa’s costar Katie Leclerc suffers from fluctuating hearing loss and portrayed a deaf character, Daphne Vasquez.

“I wrote this song a few years ago, but it was this year that made me want to release it,” Marano said to Hollywood Life “I resonated with this song in a different, but very real way during the past few months, where it constantly felt like every day brought a new level of darkness and despair.”
Vanessa picked up on American Sign Language after her five seasons on the show. On Laura’s virtual You Tour, Vanessa, Leclerc, and costar Ryan Lane signed the chorus to “Something to Believe In.” This beautiful moment was what inspired Laura to incorporate American Sign Language into the official music video.

The music video director Izak Rappaport created the visual contrast between light and dark to convey a bigger message of having someone help you find the light when you are in a dark place. Lane and Stephanie Nogueras, from the show, appeared throughout the music video with Laura. They also worked alongside Ashley Change, who was the interpreter.
Since deaf and hard of hearing people are only able to feel the vibrations from music through touch, Laura was able to include the hearing impaired community.
