Produced by Denzel Washington, Ma Rainey’s Black Bottom highlights blues singer Ma Rainey, also known as “The Mother of the Blues,” and the troubles she faced as a Black female musician in the 1920s. Boseman played Rainey’s newest band member who struggled to get along with his other bandmates.

Boseman’s wife Taylor Simone Ledward accepted the award on her late husband’s behalf in an extremely moving speech. She was in tears as she named all of the people Boseman would’ve thanked had he been alive to accept the award.

Her words moved many to tears as she courageously spoke. “He would say something beautiful, something inspiring, something that would amplify that little voice inside of all of us that tells you, ‘You can,’ that tells you to keep going, that calls you back to what you are meant to be doing at this moment in history,” she said.

This was also Boseman’s first-ever Golden Globe nomination, with Ma Rainey’s Black Bottom being his final performance. Fans are proud of the actor for his win, but they wish he would’ve been alive to witness it.
