The Golden Globes awarded 83-year-old actress Jane Fonda with the Cecil B. DeMille Award to celebrate her lifetime achievement in entertainment.

Comedian co-hosts Tina Fey and Amy Poehler introduced her with a speech followed by video messages from celebrities such as Brie Larson, Kerry Washington, and Laverne Cox.

Fonda accepted the award in a white suit which paired nicely with her platinum hair. Instead of speaking about her career or activism she instead spoke about the role of privilege and diversity in the entertainment industry.

After thanking the Hollywood Foreign Press Association, Fonda acknowledged her peers stating, “You know, we are a community of storytellers, aren’t we? And in turbulent, crisis-torn times like these, storytelling has always been essential.”

She continued by sharing her experiences of what the nominated films taught her about the world. Some of the films she mentioned included Nomadland, Minari, as well as Judas and the Black Messiah. Fonda also mentioned HBO series I May Destroy You which was not nominated but taught her “to consider sexual violence in a whole new way.”

HFPA President Ali Sar stated that this award was given to Fonda because, “For more than five decades, Jane’s breadth of work has been anchored in her unrelenting activism, using her platform to address some of the most important social issues of all time.”

She has partnered with Greenpeace since 2019 with the Fire Drill Friday meeting which involves protesting outside the Capitol. These protests were originally done in person but now meet online due to COVID-19.

Fonda has been in films such as 9 to 5, Barbella, and the 1973 production of A Doll’s House. She also portrays Grace in the Netflix series Grace and Frankie. According to Entertainment Tonight, she is preparing to film season seven —the final season— of Grace and Frankie
