Jason Sudeikis Wins Best Performance by an Actor in a Television Performance at the 2021 Golden Globes
Jason Sudeikis took home a Golden Globe on Sunday for his performance in Ted Lasso, making it the actor’s first golden globe win as well as the first win for distributor Apple TV+.
Sudeikis won in the category of Best Performance by an Actor in a Television Series – Musical or Comedy, against Don Cheadle (Black Monday), Nicholas Hoult (The Great), Eugene Levy (Schitt’s Creek), and Ramy Youssef (Ramy). Having created the television series with writers Brett Goldstein, Brendan Hunt, Bill Lawrence, Phoebe Walsh, and Joe Kelly, Sudeikis plays a football coach who was hired to coach a professional soccer team in England, despite having no coaching experience.
During the award show, Sudeikis seemed taken aback by the win, giving his 2-minute speech via Zoom. Stumbling over his words in shock, Sudeikis stated, “I kind of reject the premise of Best Actor. Because in my humble opinion, the best actor is the person you’re acting with.” and wrapped with “I want to give a shout-out to everyone I get to act with on this show because they’re incredible. Do they make me the best? No, but I know for a fact that they make me better.”

His acceptance speech gained a lot of attention on social media after viewers noticed that he had dressed down compared to other attendees, casually wearing a rainbow tie-dye sweatshirt. After the speech, host Tina Fey even joked “If anybody wants to know where they can get Jason Sudeikis’ hoodie, go to nbc.com/globesfashion.”
