John Boyega's Role in 'Small Axe' Wins Golden Globe for Best Performance by an Actor in a Television Supporting Role

Actor John Boyega won his first Golden Globe award for best performance by an actor in a television supporting role. Boyega was awarded for his outstanding role in Small Axe. The hit series, directed by Steve McQueens, consists of five original films. Boyega starred in the third episode, “Red, White and Blue” and played Leroy Logan. The episode was released in December of 2020.

The episode was based on the true story of Logan who is a young Black man in London. As a child, he witnessed her father facing police brutality. This experience drove him to join the Metropolitan Police in the early 1980s and acts to break the color barrier and change the racist attitudes of policemen within the system.

“I’m so shocked,” he said during his acceptance speech at the virtual ceremony. “I thought it was gonna be one of them nights where… you go to your bed and just chill. I’ve got Balenciagas, guys. I’ve got tracking bottoms on my bottoms and I’m comfortable, but this is exciting.”

The other actors that were nominated for the award were Dan Levy (Schitt’s Creek), Brendan Gleeson (The Comey Rule), Jim Parsons (Hollywood), and Donald Sutherland (The Undoing).

The Hollywood Foreign Press Association (HFPA) hosted the 78th Annual Golden Globe Awards in Los Angeles, California. Tina Fey and Amy Poehler hosted the first-ever bi-coastal show. The telecast also shone the spotlight on Feeding America, the nation’s largest domestic hunger-relief organization and Community Organized Relief Effort (CORE), its COVID-19 Relief Fund.
