Daniel Kaluuya Reveals He Was Not Invited to the ‘Get Out’ Premiere

For a film that made such an impact in Hollywood for its Black narrative, it’s extremely strange that the lead actor never received an invite to the premiere of the film.

Get Out is a critically acclaimed film for its storyline about race and class which made waves in the zeitgeist. Daniel Kaluuya starred as Chris Washington who is invited to meet his white girlfriend’s parents. Things take a turn for the worst when we realize that’s not the reason Chris is invited.

Given the gravity of the film and the performances given by the cast, it seems ridiculous that the Kaluuya wasn’t invited to the Sundance Film Festival premiere. However, in a recent interview with Graham Norton, he revealed to the host that he simply wasn’t invited and stayed in bed. Like all of us, Norton was shocked at this reveal however the actor replied, “That’s the industry, Graham! This is the game.”

Clearly, there is still a lot of work to be done in Hollywood surrounding diversity and inclusion. This was Jordan Peele’s first horror film and its reception pushed him to craft another horror hit, Us. As a Black filmmaker he has made Black-centered narratives, this focus shouldn’t be strange—that’s what white filmmakers do too. However, his portrayals and stories about race have drastically impacted the film industry allowing more space for Black stories than there was before.
