Taylor Swift Tweets Reaction to ‘Degrading’ and ‘Deeply Sexist’ Joke on Netflix Show ‘Ginny and Georgia’
A line from the new Netflix show, Ginny and Georgia, is receiving backlash on social media after Taylor Swift and viewers voiced their offense at the joke’s implications.
In a tweet, the singer reiterated that she is not okay with her romantic relationships – alleged or documented – being a punchline, and she is letting the world know it.
How is this still happening? How do you throw out “slut-shaming” and try to disguise it as a joke? Shaming women for a dating life that should never concern you to begin with is not okay.

In the show, Ginny (played by Antonia Gentry) asks her mother, Georgia (played by Brienne Howey), “What do you care? You go through men faster than Taylor Swift.”
Swift’s fans quickly started a Twitter trending hashtag, #RespectTaylorSwift, over the line. Swift then issued her own statement on Twitter. She called out the show’s choice of joke material by calling it “lazy” and “deeply sexist.”
Hey Ginny & Georgia, 2010 called and it wants its lazy, deeply sexist joke back. How about we stop degrading hard working women by defining this horse shit as FuNnY. The singer also called the line “degrading” as it suggests Swift’s choice of romantic encounters are more noticeable and important than her professional career choices and successes.

In addition to calling out the show and its script, Swift also criticized Netflix’s choice of distributing the joke after the streaming service produced her documentary, Miss Americana, where Swift talks about the world’s fascination with her dating life. Fans of the singer are applauding Swift for defending herself and her worth.

Swift ended her tweet by adding, “Happy Women’s History Month I guess,” seemingly shading the fact a “sexist” joke was trending during a month aimed at celebrating the history of women.
