IFPI Charts Awards K-Pop Supergroup BTS With the Global Recording Artist of the Year Award for 2020
K-pop supergroup BTS has been crowned IFPI (International Federation of the Phonographic Industry) Global Recording Artist of 2020, an award that recognizes the most popular recording artist based on the number of music downloads, streaming, and physical format sales.
On Thursday, March 4, IFPI announced that BTS has been crowned Global Recording Artist of 2020, breaking yet another record as the first non-English artist to achieve this. The hashtag #BTSNo1GlobalArtist trends at #2 in the U.S. Twitter charts as BTS’ powerful fanbase, known as ARMY, congratulates the boys and soaks up their success.
IFPI charts have been presenting this award since 2014, with recipients including One Direction, Drake, and Taylor Swift. BTS, who is the first Korean act to have won this award, was originally considered for this award in 2018 and 2019. The band ranked second place on the IFPI Global Artist Chart in 2018, and seventh place in 2019.

The chief executive of IFBI, Frances Moore, announced BTS as the winner for 2020, saying: “BTS is a global phenomenon. They have had another outstanding year, releasing three albums, and continually finding creative and engaging ways to share their story with the world. They truly show the power that music has to bring joy and happiness to people.”
BTS was prominent in the music industry in the past year, with their album MAP OF THE SOUL: 7 becoming one of the most pre-ordered albums of all time, landing at #1 on the charts in over 20 countries. Later in the year, their fully English hit-single “Dynamite” was released, scoring them their first-ever #1 single in the U.S. Seeing the success the k-pop superstars have had this year, the award is well deserved.
