Meghan Markle Compares Marrying Into the Royal Family To ‘The Little Mermaid’
Meghan Markle revealed to Oprah during their powerful CBS sit-down interview that her experience with marrying into the Royal Family parallels Ariel in The Little Mermaid.
On Sunday, March 7 the world had been anxiously awaiting the Markle and Prince Harry tell-all interview, trusting in their good friend Oprah to help them tell their story. In one of the many poignant parts of the interview, Markle referenced the beloved Disney fantasy film The Little Mermaid, where she drew upon many parallels with the main character, Ariel.
Markle explains to Oprah that she had been sitting in Nottingham Cottage when suddenly The Little Mermaid came on. She laughs with Oprah and says “And who as an adult really watches The Little Mermaid?” She figured since she’s there she might as well tune in. As Markle continued to watch the animated film, she found striking parallels between Ariel and Prince Eric to that of Markle and her husband, Prince Harry.

In the film, Ariel falls in love with Prince Eric. This love presumably would not work because Eric lives on land and Ariel lives in the sea. The mermaid meets Ursula who makes a deal with Ariel. In exchange for Ariel’s voice, Ursula will allow her to become human for three days. Due to the strong love, she has for the prince, she decides to trade in her own voice to the evil sea witch, Ursula. This moment horrified Markle as she had given up everything in her life before Prince Harry, including her acting career because she loves him so much. When Oprah asked if she was silent or silenced, Meghan heartbreakingly replies, “the latter.”

Despite the last two years that have felt like a lifetime for Markle, she also left viewers with a powerful message about hope and love. At the end of the film, Ariel does get her voice back and she lives happily ever after with Prince Eric. Markle references this same idea happening to her and Prince Harry, as she is happier than ever with him and their growing family.

Meghan Markle comparing her experience to The Little Mermaid was on point. She had to lose her voice to be with the Prince, but their happily ever after didn’t start until she got her voice back.
