Meghan Markle Reveals the Royal Family Denied Her Pleas for Help Due to Mental Health Struggles
On the evening of Sunday, March 7, Meghan Markle and Prince Harry sat down with Oprah Winfrey for their long-awaited interview to discuss why they left the royal family. More than 17 million people tuned into the two-hour interview, which aired on CBS. In a part of the interview, Markle opened up about how being a part of the royal family had taken a negative toll on her mental health to the point of struggling greatly with her mental health.

Meghan Markle, who is originally from the United States, grew up in Los Angeles, California. She and Prince Harry met through a mutual friend that set them up for a blind date in July of 2016, and they hit it off effortlessly. They announced their engagement in November of 2017, and over two million people live-streamed their marriage in May of 2018. Since Markle grew up in the United States, she was not familiar with what life was like as part of the Royal Family. Markle discusses how her mental health deteriorated once she joined the Royal Family, and even when she sought help, she was not given access to resources. She sought help through the human resource department of the palace, though learned that she could not receive any because she was not a paid employee of the institution.

Markle explained that she could not go and get help on her own because, when she married into the family, they took her passport, keys, and driver’s license. She felt that they had complete control of her life. At that point, at a loss of control in her own life, Markle explains her contemplation of suicide. No longer able to live under the circumstances, Prince Harry describes him leaving the royal family as an escape from an oppressive system. In a previous interview with James Corden, Prince Harry stated he did what any father and husband would dowhen making the desicion to leave as he believed it best for his family.

Prince Harry and Meghan Markle announced their departure from the Royal Family in March of 2020 and began their one-year transitional period. Since then, they have been building their new lives together in Los Angeles, California. Markle and Prince Harry are expecting their second child together. They announced their news on Valentine’s Day in honor of the late Princess Diana, who announced she was pregnant with Prince Harry the same day, years prior. The two confirmed that they are expecting a baby girl.

The two have begun contracts with Netflix and Apple. Oprah and Prince Harry are currently working together with Apple to produce a project regarding mental health awareness. There have been no announcements on further details of the project, but supporters are more than excited to see the finished work.
