Disney Channel has put in a pilot order for a new comedy series titled Saturdays, directed by Marsai Martin. The series will revolve around the life of an ambitious 13-year-old roller skater who strives to make it to the top with her competitive roller-skating squad while combating sickle cell anemia.

Black-ish star Marsai Martin, who has impressively set a Guinness World Record as the youngest Hollywood executive producer in history, is headed back to the world of television.

The single-camera comedy, Saturdays, is written by producer and screenwriter Norman Vance Jr., who’s responsible for the popular 2005 film Roll Bounce. He also has a track record of many hit series such as Queen Sugar, Moesha, and Girlfriends. Vance Jr. will be collaborating with Martin as she takes on the role of executive producer.

In fact, not only will fans have another great show to look forward to, but there will also be some familiar faces such as Danielle Jalade (Yes Day) who has been cast in a lead role as Paris Johnson, Golden Brooks (Girlfriends), and Omar Gooding (Smart Guy) who will play her parents.

The show follows Paris, who is the determined leader of a competitive skate crew. Since the age of 4, she had been sharpening her skills at the galaxy-painted roller-skating rink “Saturdays” while coping with occasional sickle cell anemia flare-ups. The local skating rink is owned and operated by Duchess, a former ‘90s hip-hop back-up dancer played by Yolanda “Yo-Yo” Whitaker.

Fans can look forward to the teaming up of the directorial duo to tap into the roller-skating culture in a way that’s both authentic and aspirational for their audiences. Make sure to follow Marsai Martin on Twitter to stay up to date on all of her upcoming projects.
