Nick Jonas’ music video for his newest single, “Spaceman,” finds the singer amid a lonely planet as he desperately tries to reunite with his love interest, played by Jonas’ real-life wife, Priyanka Chopra-Jonas. The video premiered in the late evening of March 11, just a few hours before his album, also titled Spaceman, dropped.

Jonas released the song “Spaceman” on February 25, two days ahead of his Saturday Night Live performance. The album is a follow-up to Jonas’ 2016 solo album, Last Year Was Complicated

In between the two solo projects, Jonas reunited with his older brothers Joe and Kevin for The Jonas Brother’s comeback, fifth studio album, Happiness Begins.

Filmed like a post-apocalyptic survival movie, the music video’s director, Anthony Mandler, transformed Barstow, California, into an isolated barren world as Jonas attempts to leave the planet. For most “Spaceman,” Jonas appears alone save a few seconds where Chopra-Jonas cameos as a holographic version of herself.

Moreover, in the music video, Jonas fails to take-off multiple times, crash landing into the planet’s dirt, as evident by Jonas seemingly going through the same daily motions and marking tally marks on his bunker’s wall. However, by the song’s end, the camera pans out, and viewers can see Jonas rocketing straight up, hinting at a possible triumphant return home.

Jonas co-wrote the song alongside Greg Kurstin and Maureen “Mozella” McDonald. Jonas said on Twitter that the COVID-19 pandemic and quarantine inspired the album, which explores the pandemic’s feeling of distance, indulgence, euphoria, and commitment.
