Opening the event, Styles started on a dimly lit stage. Behind him a sun rose, eventually glowing to the beat. Following the bluesy syncopated vibes, Styles and his background singers hit melodic notes along with groovy dance moves.

Styles conducted a performance full of energy and liveliness. From his Fine Line album, he sang “Watermelon Sugar.” The song, typically spunky pop-rock influenced, was slowed down for the Grammys.

Grammy watchers seemed to dig Styles performance as he continued.

Divulging into different genres doesn’t seem to be a rarity for Styles, though. The performance was chock full of jazz influences replicating a 1960’s funk sound. His hit single still seemed to resonate well with the live audience of nominees.

Nominated for three awards, Styles pulled forward as he won Best Pop Solo Performance for “Watermelon Sugar.” His nominations included Best Pop Vocal Album for Fine Line, Best Pop Solo Performance for “Watermelon Sugar,” and Best Music Video for “Adore You.”

Treated differently than in past years, COVID-19 threw a curveball for the award show.

The Grammy team ensured, according to Variety, that the award show won’t feel like a Zoom call, rather, “You’re going to be as entertained as if you were watching it at the Staples with 14,000 other fans.”

Styles’ performance was definitely not one to miss. His performance left an authentic touch, surrendering the Zoom feel. His complete performance is available on YouTube.

This event was done virtually, to ensure safety from COVID-19. The Grammy’s are now available to watch in full on Paramount+ and CBS.
