Pixar’s Upcoming Film ‘Luca’ Starring Jacob Tremblay and Jack Dylan Grazer Explores the Secrets of Two Friends
Disney and Pixar’s coming-of-age movie Luca follows three friends who spend their summer in Italy while two of them are hiding a big secret; they are sea monsters. The film is directed by Enrico Cascerosa who is known for Pixar’s Oscar-nominated 2011 short La Luna.
According to Variety Cascerosa stated, “This is a deeply personal story for me, not only because it’s set on the Italian Riviera where I grew up, but because at the core of this film is a celebration of friendship. Childhood friendships often set the course of who we want to become and it is those bonds that are at the heart of our story in ‘Luca.’” Cascerosa adds that the film will showcase a memorable summer for three best friends at the beautiful Italian shore.
Luca follows the story of two young boys who are having a care-free summer in Italy with their friend Giulia. Luca and Alberto appear in human form but are instantly changed into sea monsters when they come in contact with water. The two will have to hide their magical secret from their friend and the town.
The two best friends attribute to the namesake of the film. Luca is set to be played by Jacob Tremblay from Room, Wonder, and Before I Wake. Alberto will be portrayed by Jack Dylan Grazer known for IT, Shazam!, and Beautiful Boy. Their third friend, Giulia, is played by newcomer Emma Berman.
What I love about Luca is that it’s a Pixar film that doesn’t look like a Pixar film.

Not to say there’s anything wrong with the typical Pixar art style, it’s just that it feels like recently their films all look the same. This on the other hand has its own unique visual voice. pic.twitter.com/dGY66CFSJ4
Luca’s parents are Daniella (Maya Rudolph) and Lorenzo (Jim Gaffigan). Giulia’s intimidating sea-monster-hating father Massimo will be portrayed by Marco Barricelli from The Book of Daniel, Guiding Light, and The Eleventh Hour.
2014 short Lava’s producer Andrea Warren is set to produce Luca. The movie is written by Mike Jones and Jesse Andrews. Jones is the iconic writer of Disney’s Soul and Andrews wrote Indian Paintbrush’s Me & Earl & The Dying Girl as well as the novel of the same name.
According to the teaser trailer, Pixar’s Luca is slated to release this June. You can stay up to date with new information on the film by following @PixarLuca on Twitter.
