Director Emerald Fennell has been recruited to write “Zatanna” for the adaptation of the DC Comics character. Zatanna Zatara is a superhero, magician, and powerful sorcerer. She was created by Gardner Fox and Murphy Anderson and first appeared in the comic Hawkman #4. The movie is being produced by Warner Bros.’ DC Films and J.J. Abrams’ Bad Robot Productions.

Zatanna is best known for her role with the Justice League. Serinda Swan previously portrayed Zatanna on The CW’s series “Smallville.” However, this film will mark Zatanna’s first franchise appearance and the role has yet to be cast.

Fennel was the director for the five-time Oscar-nominated film, “Promising Young Woman.” The movie was her first time directing and she was able to gather notice from the Golden Globes, BAFTA, Directors Guild of America, and the Writers Guild.

She also earned two Primetime Emmy Award nominations for being the showrunner for season two of the BBC’s drama-comedy spy thriller series Killing Eve. The director has also been involved in acting. Her most notable roles are in “Anna Karenina,” “The Danish Girl,” “Call the Midwife,” and “The Crown.”

After Wonder Woman, Zatanna will make history by being the second female DC superhero to star in her movie. Though behind the scenes, Fennell’s role as the writer gives women another achievement. Many young women are represented through these important positions.

Though a release date hasn’t been released, fans will be excitingly waiting for this film to hit theaters. You can follow the writer, director, and actress on Twitter at @emeraldfennell.
