Michelle Obama and When We All Vote Co-Chairs Pen Open Letter Urging Americans to Join Fight for Voting Rights
Former First Lady, Michelle Obama, and her celebrity co-chairs published an open letter urging all Americans to do their part and take action in support of the “For the People Act”. The landmark bill was in response to recent chaotic occurrences such as the ambush on the Capitol on January 6, and high volumes of racial injustice. The historic legislation is the most significant voting rights and democracy reform since the Civil Rights Movement.
Michelle Obama launched “When We All Vote” in 2018 on a mission to bring about greater change to the culture around voting and to encourage participation. Recently, the former first lady published an open letter nudging Americans to take necessary action and start reaching out to their Senators. The letter was co-signed by over 60 A-list celeb co-chairs, supporters, and ambassadors that included familiar names such as Yara Shahidi, Alicia Keys, Ryan Reynolds, and Shaquille O’Neal.
In the lead-up to the 2018 Midterm Elections, “When We All Vote” organized over 2,500 local voter registration events and educated over 200 million Americans on the importance of voting, and provided resources to register to an estimate of four million people.
In addition, celebrities such as FreeForm’s Grown-ish star, Yara Shahidi, took to social media to express their honor in joining the nonpartisan nonprofit organization.
The “When We All Vote” organization strives to increase voter engagement and reach more people to educate them on their voting rights, voting process and fight to protect access to other methods such as mail-in ballots, early voting, and online registration.

During the 2020 election, there were historic levels of voter turnout, despite the COVID-19 pandemic, where heavy partisan gerrymandering was also evident, specifically in black and brown communities. While the turnout is to be celebrated as more Americans voice their opinion and take a stand for their future, work is far from over as the fight for equal reform has just begun.
