Viola Davis Stuns in Duro Olowu and Takes Home Oustanding Actress in a Drama Series at the NAACP Image Awards

All hail the queen of acting (and fashion). Viola Davis stunned in her colorful Duro Olowu gown, which featured a peplum detail and a fishtail hem. Olowu is a Nigerian-born British fashion designer, known for his work with prints. A Davis x Olowu collab seemed to be the perfect pairing for the NAACP Image Awards held on March 27. Davis had been styled by Elizabeth Stewart, who took to Instagram to reveal her nickname for the dress: the happy dress. She also shared several colorful heart emojis. Davis' hair had been done by Jamika Wilson and makeup by Autumn Moultrie. Her jewelry is from Boucheron.

Davis had a big night having been nominated for the Outstanding Actress award in both a Drama Series and a Motion Picture. She won both awards. Davis had been up for Entertainer of the Year but lost to D-Nice. For Oustanding Actress in a Drama Series, Davis beat out Angela Bassett, Brandee Evans, Simone Missick, and Jurnee Smollett. She won for her role as Annalise Keating in How To Get Away With Murder, a role she portrayed from 2014-2020 airing on ABC.

Davis gained a lot of recognition for the role as she won The Primetime Emmy Award, SAG Award, NAACP, and People’s Choice Award in 2015, and another SAG Award in 2016. How To Get Away With Murder itself had won AFI TV Program of the Year in 2014 and Best Drama and Writing by the NAACP in 2015. The show also won a GLAAD Award in 2015.

For the category Outstanding Actress in a Motion Picture, Davis won for her role as Ma Rainey in Ma Rainey’s Black Bottom. Davis had beat out Janelle Monáe (Antebellum), Madalen Mills (Jingle Jangle: A Christmas Journey), Tracee Ellis Ross (The High Note), and Issa Rae (The Photograph).

Fans have taken to social media to praise the acting legend.

We congratulate Davis on this well-deserved recognition and can’t wait to see her upcoming content. In celebration of Viola Davis’ success, stream Ma Rainey’s Black Bottom and How To Get Away With Murder on Netflix.
